Artello painting on the wall

Hanging something you really like on your wall, like a painting or in Dutch named a schilderij, gives your home a warm and personal feel. Are you ready for more art and style in your life? Discover Artello, affordable art for everyone, in every style and size.

Get inspired by our tips to find the perfect artwork that suits you. Colour plays a crucial role in any interior; by repeating colours in a room, you create peace and harmony. Do you want to put extra emphasis on your painting? For a light artwork, you can paint the wall behind it in a dark, matching colour. For a dark artwork, choose a lighter wall.

A hand-painted schilderij on the wall is more than just a decorative element; it is a window into the soul of the artist and a reflection of your own taste and personality. Every brushstroke carries a story, every colour choice an emotion, and the end result is a unique piece of art that brings your interior to life.

When you hang a hand-painted painting on your wall, you add a touch of authenticity to your space. Unlike mass-produced pieces, a hand-painted artwork has something special about it. You can see and feel the texture of the paint, notice the subtle variations in color, and even the energy of the artist who has carefully captured every detail. This tactile quality gives the painting an extra dimension that digital prints cannot match.

A hand-painted painting also says something about you as a collector. It shows your appreciation for craftsmanship and originality. It is a choice that goes beyond fashion or trends; it is an investment in beauty and art that will stand the test of time.

Furthermore, a hand-painted painting offers the opportunity to form a personal connection with a work of art. It can evoke a memory, enhance a feeling, or simply bring joy every time you look at it. It is a work of art that is not only seen, but also felt and experienced. Popular painting themes are abstract paintings, or in Dutch said abstracte schilderijen.

Different painting styles

Painting has been a versatile form of expression throughout history, with a wealth of styles each embodying their own unique vision and techniques. From the vibrant colors of Impressionism to the bold lines of Cubism, each painting style offers a different window on the world. Let’s explore some of the most influential painting styles.

1. Realism
Realism strives to depict the world as accurately and in detail as possible. Painters working in this style focus on capturing everyday life and ordinary people, often with a focus on social and political themes. Gustave Courbet is one of the most famous realist painters, who emphasized the complexity of human existence in his work.

2. Impressionism
Impressionism emerged in the late 19th century and broke with the traditions of detailed realistic painting. Impressionists, such as Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, emphasized capturing the fleeting effects of light and color. They used loose brushstrokes and light colors to create an impression of the moment, often depicting landscapes and scenes from everyday life.

3. Expressionism
Expressionism emerged in the early 20th century and emphasizes the expression of emotions and subjective experiences rather than the depiction of reality. This style is characterized by bold colors, distorted shapes, and intense contrasts. Painters such as Edvard Munch and Wassily Kandinsky used the expressive power of color and shape to express their inner feelings and visions.

4. Kubism
Popularized by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, Cubism revolutionized the art world by breaking down objects and figures into geometric shapes and depicting multiple perspectives simultaneously. This style challenged traditional notions of space and form, and laid the foundation for abstract art, and abstract painting in particular. Cubist works often appear fragmentary, but in fact offer a deeper, multiple perspective on their subjects.

5. Surrealism
Surrealism, influenced by the psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud, explores the world of the subconscious and the irrational. Surrealist painters, such as Salvador Dalí and René Magritte, created dreamlike, sometimes bizarre images that blurred the boundaries of reality. This style is characterized by unexpected combinations of objects and a distorted representation of reality, challenging the viewer to make their own interpretation.

6. Abstract art
Abstract art emerged in the 20th century and is a collective term for art that does not attempt to accurately depict reality, but instead uses shapes, colors, and lines to express a feeling or idea. Painters such as Jackson Pollock and Piet Mondrian played with color, structure, and composition to create works that are open to interpretation, without obvious references to the visible world.

7. Popart
Pop art is an art movement that emerged in the 1950s and 1960s as a reaction to mass media and popular culture. Artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein used imagery from advertising, comics, and consumer products to explore the influence of consumer culture. The style is characterized by bright colors, repetition, and an ironic view of society.

8. Minimalism
Minimalism is a style that emerged in the late 20th century and strives for simplicity and the reduction of art to its essence. In painting, this is achieved through the use of simple geometric shapes, limited use of color, and tight composition. Painters such as Agnes Martin and Frank Stella sought to strip art of emotional and subjective elements, creating a purely visual experience.

These styles represent only a small part of the rich history of painting. Each style offers a unique view of the world, and together they form a fascinating spectrum of human creativity and expression.

Hanging a piece of Art
Most artworks, such as canvas, seamless wallpaper and ArtFrame, are ready to hang. But how exactly do you do that? Here are some tips. All works can easily be hung on screws or sturdy nails. Depending on the size of the artwork, you can use one or more screws. The materials come with hanging systems that you can easily attach to the screws.

The canvas comes with a metal hanging system on the back. You place this system on top of a screw or nail. For works smaller than 1 meter, there is one hanging system on the back; for larger works, two systems are used.

The right size

• Make sure that the artwork covers at least 2/3 of the width of your sofa. This applies to both a single artwork and a collage.

• You can also apply the 2/3 rule above the dining table.

• Do you want to decorate the empty walls in the hall? Choose multiple artworks in a long row, or go for a panorama or wallpaper.

• For bedroom wall decoration, we recommend an artwork of at least 120 cm wide. A wall collage or wallpaper is also a beautiful option.

• Do you have an empty wall without an anchor point? Then choose an artwork of at least 80 cm high.

The space above your sofa is the perfect place for a work of art, because the sofa often takes up a central place in the interior. Pay close attention to the dimensions: a work of art that is too small will disappear, while a work that is too large can look messy.

Make sure that the work of art takes up at least 2/3 of the width of your sofa. For example, if your sofa is 180 cm wide, choose a work of art that is at least 120 cm wide. This way you maintain the balance and prevent the work from looking too small or the space from looking too full.
